The Charente
The Charente is a department in the south-west of France which is named after the Charente River which is the most important river in the department. The department's two largest towns, Angoulême and Cognac, are sited adjacent to this river. The Charente is one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution from the former province of Angoumois and it forms part of the Aquitaine Basin for the most part, and of the Massif Central for its north-eastern part.
The department is part of the region commonly known as Poitou-Charentes. It is surrounded by the following other departments of Charente-Maritime, Dordogne, Haute-Vienne, Vienne and Deux-Sèvres.
The capital of the department of the Charente is Angoulême.
